Ford Ranger outsells Toyota Hilux 2-1

The Ranger continues to be popular in foreign markets, finally breaking the 1000 mark for May. In New Zealand the newest special edition FX4 variant helped create a large spike in sales last month. Ford sold 1017 units in May, while the Hilux only managed around 580. It probably also helped that as an incentive Ford NZ has been giving away Weber Q barbecues. Toyota does still however remained the market leader with 18% share, followed by Ford with 11%.

The Ranger should see the same level of success when it arrives in North America, mostly due to the fact that there are less competitive mid size pickups here. The Tacoma does have a solid foundation here however, and it'll be interesting to see how open people are to the new Ranger platform.

It looks like we could very well be seeing a new Dakota from Dodge in the next couple years, and I believe that Hyundai's Santa Cruz is expected to hit the market by 2020. It looks like Toyota is finally stepping away from their traditional styling cues as well, so there's a chance we could see a redesigned Tacoma in the future.

Too bad Toyota will still likely take the lead with sales. RAM is doing well with their current products but they have a long way to go in the segment Toyota is well known for.

Well its obvious that Dodge is pulling out all the stops, considering they are selling both the new 2019 Ram as well as the Ram Classic this year. I personally don't know why anyone would pay full price for an outdated model, but I know some aren't too enthusiastic about the new grille design.

Yeah the difference in the cabin/tech between the two models is night and day. I would expect that they'll slowly ramp down production of the classic as sales in the 2019MY continue to grow.

All of the delays the Ram has seen from the EPA with the mild hybrid models, hasn't helped its launch. I still don't know if any of the more fuel efficient engines have arrived at dealers yet. The only model I've seen people take delivery of, are equipped with the 5.7l Hemi.

Fortunately RAM just launched this new generation so the real test will be how it performs before the mid-production cycle refresh. There will always be rough patches. Plus, RAM has a loyal following

Its going to hurt interest when consumers find that only one spec of the truck is currently available. It's been a few weeks now and we still haven't heard anything in regards to when the other powertrains will become available.

It won't hurt that much during a time they're launching a new generation. The real test will be once we're a couple years into the generation and all vehicles in the segment have all possible trims released.
