Ford confirms no Ranger Raptor for NA

It looks like those in North America will have to be content with the F150 variant for now. The director for Ford Performance has confirmed that Ford currently has no plans to bring the Ranger Raptor to the United States. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/10/18/...united-states/

He explained a few factors that have led the company to not plan a U.S. version. It is based on the global Ranger, and bringing the Raptor version up to U.S. requirements would apparently take enough time and money to make bringing it here prohibitive.

I'm sort of happy to see this because it would have been too much too soon.

We haven't seen a Ranger in how many years? Give the market some time to absorb mass market trims then evaluate around the mid-cycle refresh.

I knew this was a possibility since we had only heard of the one turbo diesel powerplant for it. I feel like its going to be a better seller in Europe anyways, where it's more practical to drive on their smaller roadways.

If it had been released in North American for launch they would have priced it very close to that of the F150 variant anyways, in an effort to upsell. Wouldn't have been to difficult to sway buyers to spend a couple extra grand to get nearly double the power and utility.

Even if there was some gap in price between both models to the extent you give it some thought, there's a lot a reasons to get the F150 Raptor instead, even a used Raptor if it came down to that.

I wonder if it also became unfeasible due to the current trade war and the increased costs of steel. We've seen other Ford vehicles like the Active get cancelled for the U.S for this exact reason.

You can bet it has because even small percentage increases in price can translate into hundreds of millions taken away from something else.
My estimates weren't far off since Ford reported it cost them nearly $1 billion USD.

Ford is probably also worried that the Ranger Raptor would cannibalize sales of the F150 variant. Though that would entirely be dependant on its powerplant, because the current bi turbo diesel would not cut it here.

they might be making other plans to prepare for refreshed rivals that will be ready by 2019-2020, as far as I know Toyota is preparing a new Tacoma and Nissan with the Frontier.

For most foreign markets, the Ranger Raptor is the first performance variant that they've seen of a pickup, outside of maybe HSV. Time will tell if consumers are willing to pay a premium for a factory spec'd model.
