Why would Nissan need to wait? They have product both above and below the Narava that suggest what range of power and torque it should be in along with what that segment is known for. Those are things they can't escape.

Nissan is a long way out from bringing a performance Navara to market. I don't know how capable the standard model is off road, but it'll need some serious tweaks if it hopes to stand up to the Raptor.

Them showing interest in a Raptor rival is much different from actually planning a full blown concept. That EnGuard concept in the picture is from 2016 and it was originally designed as a rescue truck for first responders. Regardless it looks to be plenty capable off road.

Nissan already explored this idea with the Titan which was an impressive concept, although they didn't take any action on it, instead it was to test responses from the greater truck market. Smart move considering they never did anything like it before, best to take a slower approach.

If Nissan had pushed through this concept and offered it as a production vehicle, they probably could have come to market at the same time as the upcoming Ranger Raptor. It's odd that they decided to wait a full two years until Ford confirmed the Ranger's release and now they are backtracking to bring a rival to market.

Nissan just recently unveiled the new Navara AT32 earlier this week. It features a bespoke suspension that increases ride height by 20mm, has underbody protection and larger 32' off road tires. This allows it to sit 1.5 inches higher than before, and its also coming standard with a snorkel for improved wading depth. They didn't confirm whether there would be any changes to the standard powertrain, but it is coming with an optional front differential locker, a host of standard equipment and a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty.
