New patent confirms US availability of Ranger Raptor

Although we don't have a confirmation of when, it looks like Ford has already been busy trademarking patents for the Ford Ranger in NA. These also give us some hints into the possible engine options that will be made available. The bi turbo diesel will be dropped and replaced with either the 2.7l V6 from the new Edge ST, or a high output turbocharged 2.3l four cylinder from the Focus RS and Mustang.

I wish they used the Ranger Raptor to add a carbon fiber bed, like what GMC did. It plays well into how much less abuse a bed would go through in this segment. Not a day goes by that 80% of the newer model Tacoma's I see look mint, even with thousands of miles on them. It would give this Ranger more edge.

I don't see why they wouldn't just offer both of those engines. One designed for those who care more about efficiency and the other for performance/hauling. My best guess is they will go with whichever is cheaper to mass produce.

Since its launched with a sole engine in other markets, I can bet that we'll see the same for NA. But Ford already has expansions to the platform planned for down the road I'm sure.

I would imagine that future powertrains will probably include hybrid systems of some kind. Could bring the power outputs into a more Raptor expected range. Seems like Ford has already developed this kind of set up for the 2020 Explorer.

A mild hybrid system shouldn't be too difficult to R&D, but Ford is a bit behind other automakers with their electric tech. Luckily for them their Ecoboost tech has been able to match the fuel economy of most rivals with these kinds of systems.

Aside from the eTorque in the new Ram, there aren't many automakers that have used any sort of electrification for their trucks yet. And I think there may still be availability issues with the smaller 3.6l 1500, due to certification from the EPA.

I believe that the eTorque system is standard on the 3.6, while it remains an option on the Hemi. Most early reviews of the system indicate that its pretty seamless, though it does add a bit of weight to the truck.

tuning can make up for the weight and for all we know the added weight might help in overall feel when driving on paved roads or even when off road.

Ram's new eTorque seems to fall a bit short of expectations, especially in the smaller V6. Don't really see the point of paying an extra $2k for it when the same fuel economy can be found in Ford's Ecoboost.
